Devaraja Reddy has taken over as the president of ICAI, the apex body of chartered
accountants, while Nilesh S Vikamsey has been elected as the vice-president. Both have been
elected for the year 2016-17.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is a statutory body established by the
Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 for the regulation of the profession of Chartered Accountants
in India. The affairs of the ICAI are managed by a Council in accordance with the provisions of
the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 and the Chartered Accountants Regulations, 1988. The
Council is composed of 40 members of whom 32 are elected by the members and remaining 8
are nominated by the Central Government generally representing the Comptroller and Auditor
General of India, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Ministry of Finance and other stakeholders.
Mr. Reddy is the first person from both Telugu states Andra Pradesh and Telangana to be elected president of ICAI. The election was conducted during ICAI's 23rd council meeting on February 12, 2016. With more than 28 years of continuous and dedicated professional service and a deep-rooted interest in academic discipline, he is widely commended and credited for his key role in conceptualisation. Reddy said ICAI expects to come out with
its new syllabus in the next few months. The revamped curriculum has been submitted to the
Corporate Affairs Ministry and is currently under legal vetting, he noted.
The curriculum for the chartered accountants programme is revised every 10 years and the latest
one has been prepared after long drawn consultations with stakeholders.
